The months of September and October are the best months for enjoying, experiencing, and capturing the magical beauty of Autumn in Albania. The landscapes changing, the warmth of the softly filtered sunlight, and the vibrant colors of Autumn create beautiful compositions perfect for both professionals and amateurs alike. Rugged mountains and calm lakes amidst the visual richness of Albania offer limitless photographic possibilities waiting to be documented essentially for free.
One of the most stunning places to photograph during this time for photographers is Theth in Tropojë.
The beauty of traveling through a mountainous area with fabulous views of peaks and forests in orange and red tones is breathtaking. Capturing waterfalls, traditional houses, and narrow streets can also provide great photography subject matter, too. The end of summer and the start of autumn, though cooler and quieter, is the perfect time for photographing nature, as there are fewer tourists, and you can represent nature’s authenticity. Accommodation can be arranged through guesthouses like Thethi Alpine Lodge while tasting local homemade meals which are very common food in the small village restaurants or guesthouses. A suggested itinerary is to hike to Grunas Waterfall and photograph the mountain panorama from the Watchtower.
Valbona, again in the north, is another place made for photographers. The deep valleys and clear rivers set up stunning contrasts with the autumn colors of the neighboring forests. The light is best for photographing early in the morning or late in the afternoon. For accommodation, you can sleep in Hotel Valbona or in a rural bungalow. For food, we would recommend the mountains’ traditional foods, such as buttery pies. A possible photography agenda would be walking to Roshka Waterfall from Valbona Valley, of which there are several possibilities for dramatic shots.
Berat, ¨The city of a thousand windows,” is quite stunning in autumn with all of the colors reflecting off of the old neighborhoods and the castle, making it almost look like a painting. With the narrow streets, red-tiled rooftops of the houses, and the trees changing colour, this is a place for endless possibilities to create beautiful photographs. We recommend staying in Hotel Mangalemi, which has stunning views of the castle and views of the neighborhoods of the historic area, while Onufri Restaurant presents you with traditional cuisine using local products. If you do take a photography agenda, we recommend hitting the castle, Mangalem and Gorica neighborhood streets, and the local markets for beautiful and colourful photographs.
You’ll have a different experience at Lake Pogradec. It becomes calm and peaceful as summer tourists begin to leave. There are scenic moments with reflections. The waters of the lake reflect the colors of trees and sky with breathtaking scenes. Accommodations include nearby Hotel Poeni, and taverns provide fresh fish and local specialties. If you want to setup a photography itinerary you can do lakeside walks, photograph small boats on the lake, and sunset walks over the lake!
If you prefer the countryside and authentic nature then southern villages like Dhërmi or Borsh have a nice pairing of coastal scenery and autumn colors. Rural locations have peaceful roads, fruit trees, and the late sun reflecting on the sea are all difficult and exciting photographs. Local guesthouses offer authentic experiences, and small seaside restaurants will serve fresh fish and seasonal products. Recommended itineraries include quiet beach walks and walking village streets for authentic photos.
Some practical tips to make your photos even more stunning:
– Use natural light in the morning or late afternoon for strong contrasts.
– Experiment with reflections in water and the details of changing leaves.
– Use a drone for aerial views to capture the beauty of autumn landscapes.
– Watch your exposure: autumn colors are rich and need balanced settings to capture them perfectly.
