Copșa Mare Fortified Church

The Copșa Mare Fortified Church stands in a quiet Saxon village a few kilometres from Biertan, in a green valley of southern Transylvania. Smaller and far less visited than its famous neighbour, it is a peaceful place to see the architecture of the Transylvanian Saxons.

About Copșa Mare Fortified Church

The church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries as a Gothic hall church and later fortified with a ring of walls and a tall defensive tower, so that villagers could shelter inside during raids. Inside, look for the carved stone portals and the old church furnishings.

Copșa Mare is a typical Saxon village: long rows of houses with arched gateways along a single street, surrounded by orchards and pastures. Several of its old houses have been restored as guesthouses, making it a calm base for exploring the region.

The church is usually opened by a key-keeper in the village; ask locally or at your guesthouse.
