Its position between two ancient lakes, its karst landscape and its mild, partly Mediterranean climate have made Galičica remarkably rich in plant life, including rare and endemic species found on very few other mountains. Much of the park lies within the UNESCO-listed Ohrid region, and its boundaries also take in the lakeside monastery of St Naum and Golem Grad, North Macedonia’s only island, in Lake Prespa.
The highlight for most visitors is the panoramic mountain road that winds up from the Ohrid side and crosses the ridge to Prespa. Near the top, viewpoints open onto both lakes at once, an unforgettable sight on a clear day. The park is also popular for hiking, rock climbing and paragliding, while quiet villages such as Trpejca line its Ohrid shore. The high road is often blocked by snow in winter, so check conditions before visiting.
Allow at least half a day to drive, walk and simply take in the views.
