Today the stone-paved street is lined with shops, cafés and small workshops. It is the best place to look for Ohrid pearls, a local speciality: the 'pearls' are made by hand using a lacquer prepared from the scales of a small fish found in Lake Ohrid, following family techniques passed down for generations.
At the upper end of the bazaar stands the huge old plane tree (čınar), said to be around a thousand years old, with cafés around it, and Ottoman-era buildings such as the Ali Pasha Mosque stand along the way.
The bazaar starts near the harbour, and the churches and lanes of the upper old town begin just above it, so it makes an easy first or last stretch of a walk through Ohrid.
