Ohrid, North Macedonia

Ohrid Old Town

The old town of Ohrid climbs a hillside above Lake Ohrid in southwestern North Macedonia. Together with the lake it forms the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region, inscribed by UNESCO in 1979–1980 and one of the few World Heritage Sites recognised for both cultural and natural values. In 886 Saint Clement founded the Ohrid Literary School here, making the town a major centre of Slavic literacy and learning.

About Ohrid Old Town

Legend says Ohrid once had 365 churches, one for every day of the year. Among those that survive are the 13th-century Church of St John at Kaneo, perched on a rocky outcrop above the water, and the medieval Church of St Sophia. At Plaošnik, the restored church of St Panteleimon stands among the remains of early Christian basilicas with floor mosaics.

Narrow cobbled lanes link these sites with traditional houses, the ancient theatre and Tsar Samuel’s Fortress at the top of the hill, while the lakeside promenade invites a slow evening walk.
