Porto Palermo

Porto Palermo is one of the most captivating destinations along the Albanian Riviera, nestled in a sheltered bay between Himarë and Qeparo, where turquoise waters meet rugged hills and a rocky peninsula. With its fascinating history, dramatic coastal scenery and peaceful atmosphere, Porto Palermo offers a memorable combination of culture, heritage and seaside beauty.

About Porto Palermo

The highlight is Porto Palermo Castle, also known as Ali Pasha’s Castle, a remarkable triangular fortress traditionally associated with Ali Pasha of Tepelena and built in the early 19th century. Surrounded by the sea and connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, the fortress features imposing stone walls, rounded towers and a compact central courtyard. Inside, visitors can explore its vaulted chambers and passageways, while the surrounding walls offer spectacular views across the bay and the Ionian Sea. Its unusual architecture and strategic location make it one of the most distinctive historical landmarks along Albania’s southern coast.

Porto Palermo also reflects Albania’s more recent history. During the Cold War, the bay became an important military area, and a submarine tunnel was constructed into the surrounding rock to shelter the Albanian naval fleet. These military installations remain reminders of the country’s years of isolation under communist rule and add another fascinating layer to the area’s heritage.

Today, Porto Palermo is an ideal destination for combining sightseeing with relaxation. The sheltered bay, small pebble beaches and exceptionally clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the peaceful coastal surroundings. The area fits easily into a scenic journey along the Riviera between Himarë and Sarandë, with nearby attractions including Llamani Beach, the traditional village of Qeparo and the long shoreline of Borsh Beach.

The castle and surrounding landscape offer limited shade, so comfortable shoes, water and sun protection are recommended. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for exploring the fortress, while summer is ideal for swimming. Porto Palermo is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, when the sunlight illuminates the historic stone walls and the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea.
