Ruse

Ruse is Bulgaria's main port on the Danube and one of the country's largest cities, facing the Romanian town of Giurgiu across the river. Its elegant centre, built largely in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, has earned it the nickname 'Little Vienna'.

About Ruse

The streets around Svoboda Square are lined with Neo-Baroque and Neoclassical buildings, including the Dohodno Zdanie (Profit Building) and the Freedom Monument. The oldest building in town is the Holy Trinity Cathedral of 1632, while just outside the city lie the rock monastery of Basarbovo and the rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo. Ruse is also the birthplace of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Elias Canetti. Lying about 70 km south of Bucharest, it is the natural first stop in Bulgaria when travelling from Romania over the Danube Bridge.
