The Castle of Tirana

The Castle of Tirana, also known as the Fortress of Justinian (Kalaja e Tiranës), stands at the very heart of the city, where the main east–west and north–south routes once crossed. Its history goes back before 1300 to the Byzantine era, and in the late 18th century it came under the control of the Toptani family of Krujë.

About The Castle of Tirana

Today the most visible remains are stretches of Ottoman-era wall about six metres high, while recently uncovered foundations have been incorporated into the pedestrian Murat Toptani Street, a leafy walkway running past the castle near the Parliament.

Since December 2018 the area inside the old walls has been open to visitors as a lively quarter with a traditional-style bazaar, souvenir and craft shops, and restaurants serving Albanian cuisine. It is just a few minutes’ walk from Skanderbeg Square, and free to wander.
