In 1928 the tower was raised to around 35 metres and fitted with a new clock bought from Germany. It has since survived war damage and several changes of mechanism, and was fully restored in 2010.
Visitors can climb some 90 steps up the narrow interior to the balcony beneath the clock, where the view opens over Skanderbeg Square, the mosque and the busy centre of the capital.
