National Gallery of Arts

The National Gallery of Arts (Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve) is Albania’s leading art institution, located on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard in the centre of Tirana. It opened to the public in 1954 and moved into its current building on the boulevard in 1974.

About National Gallery of Arts

The gallery’s collection numbers over 5,000 works and traces the story of Albanian art from the 19th century to the present day. Highlights include paintings by pioneers such as Kolë Idromeno and works by Sadik Kaceli, but the gallery is best known for its extensive holdings of socialist realism. Heroic workers, partisans and scenes of collective labour offer a vivid insight into how art was used to shape public life during the communist period.

Beyond its permanent collection, the gallery has long hosted temporary exhibitions of Albanian and international artists, as well as educational programmes for children and students. Please note that the gallery closed in October 2021 for a major reconstruction project, which includes renovating the existing building and adding a new one nearby. Check whether it has reopened before planning your visit.

When open, it is one of the best places in Tirana to understand Albania’s modern history through the eyes of its artists.
