After a renovation in the 2010s, the old market became a bright covered market hall and a pedestrian square. Stalls sell fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, olives, honey, spices and home-made raki, much of it brought in from the villages around the capital.
Around the square, the streets are lined with cafés, wine bars and traditional restaurants, which make it a favourite spot for an evening out as much as for morning shopping. It is a good place to try Albanian dishes and local products side by side.
A visit to the New Bazaar shows a different side of Tirana: everyday life, local flavours and the friendly bustle of the city’s market traditions.
