Pëllumbas Cave

Pëllumbas Cave, also known as the Black Cave (Shpella e Zezë), is a karst cave on the slopes of Mount Dajti, about 25 km south-east of Tirana. It opens high above the Skorana gorge of the Erzen River, a short hike from the village of Pëllumbas, and is a popular day trip from the capital.

About Pëllumbas Cave

The cave runs for around 360 metres and is up to 15 metres wide, with chambers decorated by stalactites and stalagmites. Its scientific importance is considerable: bones of the extinct cave bear have been found inside, together with traces of prehistoric people who used the cave in the Palaeolithic. It is protected as a natural monument.

The adventure starts in Pëllumbas, where a marked trail of about 2 km climbs along the gorge, with fine views over the Erzen canyon; allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way. Beyond the entrance the cave is completely dark, so bring a good torch or headlamp, sturdy shoes and a warm layer, and watch your step on the uneven floor. Guides and gear are available in the village, and in summer many visitors round off the day at the natural pools of the river below.

Combining a scenic walk with a glimpse of deep prehistory, it is an easy and memorable escape from Tirana.
