Karavasta Lagoon

Karavasta Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Albania, covering about 42 square kilometres on the Adriatic coast near Divjakë. Separated from the sea by a long strip of sand, it lies at the heart of Divjakë-Karavasta National Park and is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

About Karavasta Lagoon

The lagoon is famous for its colony of the rare Dalmatian pelican, which nests on its small islands and represents around five per cent of the world population. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here, including flamingos, herons and cormorants, making it one of the country’s top birdwatching spots.

Visitors can explore by boat among reed beds and islets, walk in the coastal pine forest of Divjaka, and taste lagoon fish and eel in local restaurants. Early morning and sunset are the best times to see birds.
