The mosque was built for the guilds of unmarried craftsmen and young shop workers of the town, who also served as guards for the bazaar, and it takes its name from them. It was formerly known as the Sylejman Pasha Mosque. During the communist period, when religion was banned, its portico was used as a shop.
Its most striking feature is the painted decoration: the mosque is adorned with murals both inside and on the exterior, which are admired for their high artistic quality. The building rises over two floors, with an arcaded portico on the upper level and a low minaret, giving it a delicate, almost domestic appearance that fits neatly into the streetscape. It is a Cultural Monument of Albania and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Berat and Gjirokastër.
The mosque is not always open, but its painted facade alone makes it well worth a stop on a walk through Mangalem.
