St. Lawrence Fortress

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St Lawrence Fortress, stands on a sea cliff 37 metres high just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik. Tradition dates it to the 11th century, when the people of Dubrovnik are said to have fortified the rock before Venice could build its own fort there; the first written records of it date from 1301.

About St. Lawrence Fortress

Above its gate is the famous inscription “Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro”, meaning that freedom should not be sold for all the gold in the world, a fitting motto for the old Republic. The walls facing the sea are up to 12 metres thick, while those facing the city are only about 60 centimetres.

From the battlements visitors enjoy sweeping views of the old town walls and the Adriatic. The fort is a much-loved stage of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, where performances of Hamlet have become a tradition, and it served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
