Viroi Lake

Viroi Lake (Liqeni i Viroit) is a small spring-fed lake about three kilometres north-west of Gjirokastër, beside the main road into the city from Tepelenë. Its water rises from a karst spring known as Mëma e Viroit, creating a green and peaceful oasis right at the gateway to Gjirokastër.

About Viroi Lake

The spring emerges from a flooded cave, and the level of the lake changes through the year, rising with the winter and spring rains and falling in the dry summer months. The underwater cave system has drawn cave divers to explore its depths, and the area is protected as a natural monument, with rich plant and animal life around its shores.

Around the water, Viroi Park is a favourite local spot for a coffee or a relaxed lunch, with cafés and restaurants along the lakeside. A long promenade links the lake with the city, and many locals walk or cycle out for a picnic beneath the trees. It makes a restful break from the steep cobbled streets of the old town, especially on a warm afternoon.

Close, easy and refreshingly green, Viroi is a pleasant pause before or after exploring Gjirokastër.
