For years the boat was a lifeline for the remote Tropojë region, carrying villagers, goods and animals when the mountain roads were poor. Today it is used by locals and travellers alike: passenger boats and a larger car ferry share the route, and the boats can drop off residents at isolated hamlets along the shore.
The ferry is also the key link in the classic northern Albania loop. Travellers from Shkodër take the boat to Fierzë, continue by minibus to the Valbona Valley, hike over the Valbona Pass to Theth and return to Shkodër, or do the same route in reverse.
Boats leave Koman in the morning and return from Fierzë later in the day, and early minibuses from Shkodër connect with the departures. The service runs mainly from spring to autumn, with the most sailings in summer; timetables change by season, so check and book ahead, especially for the car ferry. Sit on the open deck for the best views, and bring water and a light jacket.
