Its origins go back to the Ottoman period, when Korçë was a thriving centre of crafts and trade on the routes linking Albania with Greece and the wider Balkans. After an extensive fire, much of the bazaar was rebuilt in 1879, giving it the appearance it largely keeps today. Merchants and travellers stayed in its traditional hans, or inns, such as the well-known Elbasan Inn, built around courtyards where caravans could rest.
After decades of decline, the bazaar was extensively restored in recent years and is now a lively place to wander. Its cobbled streets are lined with cafés, restaurants, small shops and craft workshops, and in the evening the area fills with locals and visitors enjoying traditional food and Korçë’s well-known beer.
A stroll through the Old Bazaar is one of the best ways to experience Korçë’s blend of history, hospitality and relaxed charm.
