Korçë has long been an important centre of Orthodox Christianity in Albania. Its former cathedral, dedicated to St George, was destroyed by the communist authorities in 1968, during the years when religion was banned. After the return of religious freedom in the early 1990s, a new cathedral was built, and it was consecrated in 2002 as the seat of the Orthodox metropolis of Korçë.
The exterior is crowned by a large dome and framed by twin bell towers, making it visible from much of the city. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and luminous, with white walls and a richly carved wooden iconostasis as the centrepiece. Visitors are welcome outside service times; modest dress is appreciated.
A visit to the Resurrection Cathedral pairs naturally with a walk along the boulevard to the Old Bazaar, offering a glimpse of Korçë’s religious and cultural life.
