Local stories cling to the rock. One legend links the town’s name to a hero called Premt, who is said to have leapt from the stone rather than fall into enemy hands, while another claims it was hurled here by a giant. In the 18th and 19th centuries the rock served as a lookout over passing caravans, and a few stones of an old castle, known as the castle of Bolenga, survive on its summit.
A stairway winds up the side of the rock, and the climb takes less than a quarter of an hour. At the top you are rewarded with panoramic views over the rooftops of Përmet, the Vjosa valley and the surrounding mountains. The steps can be uneven, so wear comfortable shoes, and bring water on hot summer days, as there are no facilities at the top.
Small but full of stories, the City Stone is the natural place to begin exploring Përmet.
