Steep cobbled lanes lead past colourful Bulgarian National Revival mansions with painted facades, carved wooden ceilings and overhanging upper floors. Many now house museums and galleries, including the Kuyumdzhiev House, home to the Regional Ethnographic Museum, and the elegant Balabanov House. Walkers pass through the ancient Hisar Kapia gate, reach the Roman theatre, and can climb Nebet Tepe for wide views over the city.

Plovdiv Old Town
Plovdiv Old Town spreads across the Three Hills of a city often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Thracians, Romans (who knew the city as Philippopolis), Byzantines and Ottomans all left their mark here, and settlement on the Nebet Tepe hill goes back thousands of years. Plovdiv was European Capital of Culture in 2019.
