The mountain played its part in the 1984 Winter Olympics, hosting the bobsleigh and luge events on a concrete track completed in 1982. During the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, front lines ran across Trebević: the original cable car, opened in 1959, was destroyed, and the Olympic bobsleigh track was used as an artillery position. The rebuilt cable car opened in April 2018, with some gondolas painted in the colours of the Olympic rings.
From the upper station it is a short walk down the road to the track, which has not hosted competitions since the war. Its twisting concrete curves, now covered in colourful graffiti, wind through the forest, making for a haunting and photogenic walk. Trebević also offers forest trails, picnic spots and wide views over the city; stay on marked paths, as parts of the mountain were mined during the war. Check the cable car’s operating status before visiting.
It is the quickest way to swap the bustle of Baščaršija for fresh mountain air.
