About St Nedelya Church

The present building, with its large central dome and rounded side apses, was rebuilt between 1927 and 1933. The rebuilding followed the 1925 bomb attack on the church, carried out during a state funeral, which killed well over a hundred people; a plaque by the entrance recalls the event.

Inside, the church is richly decorated with murals and a gilded iconostasis. It also keeps the relics of the medieval Serbian King Stefan Milutin, venerated as a saint, which is why it is sometimes called the Church of the Holy King.

St Nedelya Square sits on the main north–south axis of central Sofia, steps from the Sveta Sofia statue, the Serdika metro station and the start of Vitosha Boulevard.
