Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan is Montenegro’s most iconic view: a tiny 15th-century fishing village on an islet, joined to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus, its stone houses and red roofs set against the blue Adriatic. Photographed from the hillside above, it has become one of the most recognisable images of the whole Balkan coast.

About Sveti Stefan

The islet is a luxury resort, so access is limited, but the best views are free. Admire it from the road above the village, where several lay-bys and terraces look straight down onto the island, or walk down to the pink-sand beaches on either side of the isthmus.

A coastal path leads north through the pines and olive trees of the Miločer park to the Queen’s Beach, a small sheltered cove with clear turquoise water. The walk offers ever-changing views back towards the island and is one of the most pleasant short strolls on the Montenegrin coast.

Sveti Stefan lies just south of Budva, so it fits easily into a day on the Budva Riviera or a drive along the Montenegrin coast towards Kotor. It is one of the highlights of our Tour of Montenegro: Budva or Kotor Day Tour from Tirana, which combines the coast with the old towns of Montenegro.

The coastal road runs right above the village, so a short photo stop is easy on any trip along the Adriatic. Late spring and early autumn are ideal, with warm sea water and fewer crowds than in July and August, while the morning light is best for photographs of the island.
