Valbona Pass (Valbona–Theth Hike)

The hike over the Valbona Pass, Qafa e Valbonës, is the classic trek of the Albanian Alps, linking the valleys of Valbonë and Theth across the Accursed Mountains. The pass lies at around 1,800 metres, between bare limestone peaks.

About Valbona Pass (Valbona–Theth Hike)

The trail is usually walked in one day, covering about 17 kilometres in six to eight hours. From the Valbonë side it climbs through beech forest and summer pastures to the pass, where both valleys open up below, then descends steeply into Theth, past old stone houses and mountain cafés.

The route is best done between June and September, when the snow has melted. It needs good fitness and proper hiking shoes, and many travellers combine it with the Komani Lake ferry to make a loop through northern Albania.

For anyone who loves mountains, crossing from Valbonë to Theth on foot is one of the most rewarding days in the Balkans.
