The street is named after the Russian general Iosif Gurko, who liberated Tarnovo from Ottoman rule in 1877. Its houses, built mostly in the 19th century, have white walls, wooden upper floors that jut out over the street and small gardens hanging over the gorge. Some of them are now museums or guesthouses.
The street offers fine views over the river bend and the Asenevtsi Monument opposite, especially in the evening light.
Wear good shoes, as the cobbles are uneven, and continue on to the Samovodska Charshia craft street a short walk away.
