A church has stood on this site since the Middle Ages. After the earthquake of 1880 damaged the old cathedral, it was rebuilt in its present neo-Gothic form to designs by the architect Hermann Bollé.
The spires were damaged again in the 2020 earthquake, and restoration work has been under way since. The square in front of the cathedral, with its golden Virgin Mary column, remains a lively meeting place next to the Dolac market.
The cathedral is the natural starting point for a walk through Zagreb’s Upper Town, its oldest and most picturesque quarter.
