Albania has a lot of untouched and breathtaking natural beauty, and one of its most beautiful gems is without a doubt The Blue Eye in Saranda (Syri i Kaltër in Albanian). This natural spring, with its almost surreal colors and feeling, is not just a site, it’s an experience. A site where time feels like it ceases to exist and nature communicates in silence.

A little background

The Blue Eye in Saranda is a karst spring with high pressure that bubbles up from deep underground. We don’t know how deep the spring is; even divers who reached more than 50 meters down did not hit the bottom. From above, the water resembles a giant eye; there is a navy blue center with turquoise and emerald rings wrapping around it. You can see why it was named the Blue Eye. Culturally, the mythology says this was the eye of a mythical creature that once watched over nature. This place still feels mythological and spiritual today.

How to get there?

The Blue Eye is only about 20 km from the coastal city of Saranda traveling on the road to Gjirokastër, and can be reached:
By car: It is drivable, although the last part of the road is bit away from standard.
By a tour company: We here at Albania Inbound encourage taking one of our day trips (Gjirokastra & Blue Eye Day Tour) or multi-day tour, which includes pre-packaged tours to the Blue Eye in Saranda and many other magnificent places in southern Albania. Our guides offer a wealth of local knowledge, and you will have an enjoyable trip, with added stops and more comfort.

By bike or motorbike: For the more adventurous, this option is best for the scenic countryside.

The travel itself can be just as magical as the destination, with everywhere you turn olive groves, hills, and unspoiled nature.
