The life we know in the capital, is dynamic and sometimes surprising, but every so often, we all need a little something different, and to clear our mental closet. Fortunately, Albania is small and diverse and it is easy to escape to the countryside without having to travel far. Whether it is to escape into the beauty of nature, a historical wander through interesting towns, or just a slice of rural authenticity, you can have the perfect weekend escape while being so close to Tirana.
Here are five memorable weekend escapes from Tirana, all will take you between a two and three hour drive from the capital.

- Kruja: History with a view
Just 45 minutes north of Tirana lies the hilltop town of Kruja with the ideal combination of culture, history, and mountain air. Stroll through the cobblestone pavements of the old bazaar with many artisans who make handmade rugs, silver filigree, and traditional dress. Visit the Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg Museum within the castle, who is Albania’s national hero. The fortress walls have panoramic views of the plains and stretching out to the Adriatic Sea.
Where to stay: There are boutique guesthouses within the castle for an authentic Ottoman-era experience.
Don’t miss: A traditional lunch with mountain herbs and slow-cooked lamb at overlooking the valley from a terrace restaurant.

- Belsh: A town of a hundred lakes
Belsh is rarely on the radar of the traditional tourist, and is a hidden gem about 90 minutes from Tirana, in central Albania. Comprising of over 80 small lakes, Belsh has a peaceful disposition, providing a getaway for nature enthusiasts, cyclists, or those looking to unplug and rejuvenate. - Cape of Rodon: The Untouched Coast
Durres may be the default coast for Tirana visitors, and those willing to travel a bit more for off the beaten path will also want to travel north (1.5 hours) to the Cape of Rodon. The narrow peninsula is set into the Adriatic, and while it is remote, you will be amazed by the local nature nestled behind historic sites. Don’t forget to visit the 15th-century Rodoni Castle, which is half sunken in the sea. Plan a secluded beach picnic at one of the cape’s remote beaches complete with clear turquoise waters.
Where to stay: Adorable beach villas or guesthouses in the nearby villages such as Maminas.

Also only 45 minutes away, Pëllumbas is a small village; perfect for a spontaneous escape to nature. A short hike, along a pleasant track, will take you to the Black Cave (Shpella e Zezë), one of Albania’s oldest Karst caves, inhabited since pre-history. The path to the cave offers amazing photo opportunities of the Erzen River valley, and the opportunity to enjoy some fresh mountain air.
