Black Church

The Black Church towers over the old town of Brașov and is one of the great Gothic churches of south-eastern Europe. Building began at the end of the 14th century as Saint Mary’s Church and took almost a hundred years. After the Reformation it became a Lutheran parish church. Its name comes from the Great Fire of 1689, which brought down the roof and, according to tradition, left the walls blackened with smoke.

About Black Church

Inside, the bright, largely rebuilt interior holds a remarkable collection of Ottoman Anatolian carpets, brought by Saxon merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries, along with a bronze baptismal font from 1472. The Buchholz organ, completed in 1839 with nearly 4,000 pipes, is described as the largest mechanical church organ in Romania and is still played in concerts.
