Like Ottoman-era hans across the Balkans, it was designed around a large inner courtyard, with shops and storerooms on the ground floor and rooms for travellers and merchants above, reached by long wooden galleries.
In 1812 the inn hosted the preliminary talks for the Treaty of Bucharest, which ended a war between the Russian and Ottoman empires. Restored several times since, it now holds a restaurant and terraces in the courtyard, and remains one of the most atmospheric places to eat in the city.
The inn stands on the southern edge of the Old Town, next to the ruins of the Old Princely Court (Curtea Veche), and is a natural end point for a walk past Stavropoleos and Caru' cu Bere.
