Tinkers Alley (Kazandzijsko Sokace)

Tinkers' Alley, or Kazandžijsko sokače, is a short cobbled street in the centre of Niš, lined with low old houses that are now cafés and restaurants. It is the last surviving part of the old Ottoman bazaar of Niš.

About Tinkers Alley (Kazandzijsko Sokace)

The street takes its name from the kazandžije, the coppersmiths and tinsmiths who once had their workshops here, making pots and cauldrons. Its small houses date from the late 19th century, after Niš was liberated from Ottoman rule. Today the alley, officially named Kopitareva Street, is one of the most popular places in the city to meet friends.

It is lively from morning coffee to late at night, especially in summer when the terraces spill out onto the cobbles.

Try the famous Niš grill, such as pljeskavica or ćevapi, in one of the restaurants, and walk on to the fortress just across the river.
