Narta Lagoon

Narta Lagoon is a large, shallow coastal lagoon just north of Vlorë, separated from the Adriatic by a narrow strip of dunes. Covering around 42 square kilometres, it is one of Albania’s most important wetlands and part of the protected landscape around the mouth of the Vjosa river.

About Narta Lagoon

The lagoon is a haven for birdlife and an internationally recognised Important Bird Area. Tens of thousands of waterbirds spend the winter here, and it is famous for its flocks of flamingos, which can number in the thousands. Herons, egrets, pelicans and many waders also feed in its shallow waters and the surrounding salt pans.

The highlight for many visitors is Zvërnec Island, a pine-covered islet reached by a wooden footbridge around 270 metres long. Among the trees stands the Zvërnec Monastery, dedicated to St Mary and dating from the 13th–14th century, protected as a cultural monument since 1963. Spring and autumn migration, as well as the winter months, are the best times for birdwatching; bring binoculars and visit early or late in the day for the best light.

Combining nature, history and wide open views, Narta Lagoon is a peaceful contrast to the busy beaches of Vlorë.
