Most people pass within a few kilometres of Preza and never know it. The castle stands on a hill above the plain between Tirana and the airport, and from its walls you can see the runway on one side, the mountains of Krujë on another and, on a clear day, the Adriatic.
What it is
The fortress dates mainly from the fifteenth century, built during the period of Ottoman expansion and Albanian resistance, with earlier foundations beneath. It is compact, with corner towers and an interior courtyard, and inside stands a clock tower added in the Ottoman period that has become the village's symbol.
The castle anchors the village of Preza rather than sitting apart from it. Houses press up to the walls and the whole arrangement feels lived-in instead of preserved.
The view, which is the reason to come
Preza's hill is isolated in the middle of flat ground, so the panorama is unusually complete: Krujë's castle visible on its mountain to the north, Tirana's towers to the east, the plain and the sea to the west. Sunset is the moment, and the terrace restaurants inside and beside the castle exist because of it.
Getting there
From Tirana it is about forty minutes by car, or ten to fifteen minutes from Tirana International Airport — which makes it a genuinely good option for an early arrival or a long layover. The road up is paved and easy. There is parking by the village.
Without a car, a taxi from the airport is quick and cheap by European standards. Public transport is awkward.
Who it suits
Travellers landing in the afternoon with nothing booked, families wanting an easy outing, and anyone who likes a view with dinner. It is not a deep historical site — there is little interpretation — but as a first or last hour in Albania it works better than most things nearer the city.
When to go
Year-round. Clear winter days give the longest views. Summer evenings are the most pleasant time to be on a terrace up here, with a breeze the plain below does not get.
Practical notes
- Entrance is usually free or a token amount.
- Restaurants are open through the season; check ahead in winter.
- Walls are low in places and unfenced — keep an eye on small children.
- Combine with Krujë, thirty minutes north, for a castle-and-bazaar day.
If your flight lands at two in the afternoon and your hotel check-in is at six, this is the best use of those four hours in the country.
