Bihać is a riverside town in northwest Bosnia and Herzegovina and the gateway to the Una National Park. The clear green Una River runs right through the centre, past the Captain’s Tower and the Fethija Mosque, a former Gothic church whose carved stone portal still recalls its medieval origins.
The old core of the town is small and easy to explore on foot. The Captain’s Tower stands beside a domed Ottoman tomb, the riverside promenades lead to shady bathing spots and wooden footbridges, and a hill just outside town is crowned by the ruins of the Sokolac Fortress.
Just outside town the Una tumbles over a series of travertine cascades, most famously at Štrbački buk and the waterfalls of Martin Brod, with wooden walkways and viewpoints over the falls. The river is also popular for rafting and kayaking in the warmer months, and its emerald pools and green islands make the whole valley a paradise for walkers and photographers.
On our Balkan routes Bihać is a peaceful nature stop on the way between Croatia and central Bosnia. It is included in the All the Balkan Countries: A 16 Day Tour and the Tour of Yugoslavia in 12 Days, offering a breath of fresh air between the cities of the region.
Bihać lies close to the Croatian border, which makes it an easy stop on the road between the two countries. The waterfalls are at their most powerful in spring, when the river is high, while summer is the best season for swimming and rafting and autumn brings beautiful colours to the forests of the park.
