Palace of the Parliament

The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is one of the most striking buildings in Europe. Ordered by Nicolae Ceaușescu and first called the People’s House, it was begun in 1984 on Dealul Spirii, where much of the historic Uranus district was demolished to make room for it. Chief architect Anca Petrescu led a team of around 700 architects, and the building was completed in 1997.

About Palace of the Parliament

With about 1,100 rooms and a floor area of some 365,000 square metres, it is considered the largest civilian administrative building in the world, and one of the heaviest. Today it houses Romania’s Chamber of Deputies and Senate, the Constitutional Court, museums and a conference centre. Guided tours lead through marble halls, vast chandeliers and grand staircases, and visitors need to bring a valid physical ID card or passport.
