Amphitheatre of Durrës

The Amphitheatre of Durrës is a Roman arena built in the early 2nd century AD in what was then the port city of Dyrrachium. With room for about 20,000 spectators, it is considered the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkan Peninsula, and it is on Albania’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

About Amphitheatre of Durrës

Damaged by earthquakes and gradually buried, it was forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery in 1966 in the middle of the modern city, where houses still stand on part of the site. Visitors can walk through its vaulted corridors and look down into the arena, and see a small early Christian chapel built within the structure, decorated with rare mosaics added in the 6th century.

The site, in the centre of Durrës, is open to visitors as a museum and also hosts summer events such as the city’s film festival.
