Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro, a green and relaxed city set where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet. Known as Titograd during the Yugoslav period, it is a modern and compact city, and a convenient base for exploring the country’s interior and the north of Albania.

About Podgorica

Its landmarks include the modern Millennium Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge over the Morača, and the old Ottoman quarter of Stara Varoš with its stone clock tower and the old bridge over the Ribnica. The golden domes of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ rise above the newer districts, and the riverbanks of the Morača, with their pebble beaches and canyon walls, are popular for walks on summer evenings.

On the edge of town lie the Roman ruins of Doclea, an ancient city whose foundations, streets and basilicas are spread across open fields near the meeting of the Morača and Zeta rivers.

From Podgorica it is a short drive to Lake Skadar National Park, the vineyards of the Crmnica valley and the old royal capital of Cetinje, while the cliffside Ostrog Monastery is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Balkans. Podgorica is a stop on our Tour of Yugoslavia in 12 Days and on the Albania – Macedonia – Kosovo – Montenegro 6 Day Tour.

The city is close to the Albanian border north of Shkodër and has an international airport. Summers are very hot, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing and for day trips to the lake and the mountains.
