The lake’s size changes with the seasons, from around 370 to 530 square kilometres, creating a mosaic of open water, reed beds, marshes and floating water lilies. It is one of Europe’s most important wetlands for birds, with around 270 species recorded, including the rare Dalmatian pelican.
The small town of Virpazar is the main gateway, with boat trips leaving from its harbour to explore channels lined with lilies, quiet fishing villages and islands crowned by medieval churches and monasteries, such as Kom. The surrounding hills are dotted with vineyards producing the local Vranac and Krstač wines. Late spring and early summer, when the lilies bloom, are especially beautiful, while birdwatchers will find interest in every season.
Peaceful, green and rich in history, Lake Skadar offers a refreshing contrast to Montenegro’s busy coast and is an easy trip from Podgorica or the Riviera.
