Over thousands of years the river has carved a deep limestone canyon, creating a staircase of cascades that drop from one emerald pool into the next. Caves and steep pale cliffs line the gorge, and the highest waterfall plunges more than 20 metres. The number of falls varies with the season and the amount of rain, and the scene is at its most dramatic in spring, when the water runs high.
The lowest lakes are the easiest to reach, with a short walk from the entrance and places to rest by the water. More adventurous travellers can follow the canyon trail upstream to the higher pools, though the path becomes rocky and steep and sturdy shoes are essential. In summer the cool pools are popular for swimming, and the high cliffs have even hosted diving competitions.
