The present building is modern. It was built in 1994–1995 on the site of the old Fushë Çela Mosque, a historic centre of Islamic learning with its own madrasa, which was destroyed during the communist era. Funding came from the Saudi businessman Sheikh Zamil Abdullah Al-Zamil, and the new mosque, named after Abu Bakr, the first caliph, was inaugurated on 27 October 1995. It was renovated in 2008.
Look out for the twin minarets, each just over 41 metres tall, rising beside the large central dome. Inside, the decorated prayer hall can hold around 1,300 worshippers. Visitors are welcome after prayer times; dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering and be mindful of anyone at prayer.
Easy to combine with a walk through the centre, the Ebu Bekr Mosque tells the story of the revival of religious life in Shkodër after the fall of communism.
