Rana e Hedhun

Rana e Hedhun is a striking coastal sand dune on the Adriatic, about 4 km north-west of Shëngjin in northern Albania. Its name means “thrown sand” in the local Gheg dialect, and from a distance it really does look as if sand has been poured down the mountainside into the sea.

About Rana e Hedhun

The dunes were shaped by the wind, which drives fine sand from the shore up the steep slopes of Mount Renci, a ridge that drops sharply into the Gulf of Drin. The result is a great sweep of sand climbing the hillside above a natural beach, an unusual sight on this coast. The site is protected as a natural monument for its distinctive landscape.

Most visitors come for the beach below the dune and the fun of scrambling up the soft sand, which can only be done on foot. The climb is steep but rewarding, with wide views over the Gulf of Drin and the coast towards Shëngjin. It is also a favourite place for photography and hiking, especially in the warm light of late afternoon, and in summer the area often hosts events and youth activities. Bring water and sun protection, as the sand heats up quickly on a hot day.

Wild and photogenic, Rana e Hedhun is an easy and memorable outing from Shëngjin.
