Long a modest area of farming and fishing, Velipojë has grown into a lively resort, and since 2005 it has lain within the Buna River–Velipojë Protected Landscape, a mosaic of river estuary, lagoon, wetlands, pine woods and sand dunes. These habitats make the area an important stopover for migrating birds, and the lagoon and river mouth are popular with birdwatchers.
In July and August the seafront promenade, hotels, restaurants and beach bars come to life, and the broad sandy shore is well suited to families. For a quieter experience, head towards the western end near the river mouth, or visit in June or September. The resort is about half an hour’s drive from Shkodër, making it an easy day trip.
With its blend of sand, river and wetland scenery, Velipojë shows a very different side of the Albanian coast from the rocky Riviera in the south.
