Church on the Hill

The Church on the Hill crowns the highest point of the citadel of Sighișoara, its Gothic walls looking down over the medieval town and the valley of the Târnava Mare. It is the most important church in Sighișoara and part of the town's UNESCO World Heritage site.

About Church on the Hill

Built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, it is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Transylvania. Inside are fragments of medieval wall paintings, carved altars and a crypt, a rarity among the churches of Transylvania. It is a Lutheran church, built and used by the town's Saxon community.

Beside it lies the old German cemetery, shaded by trees and climbing the hillside behind the church, one of the most atmospheric corners of the town.

Reach it by the covered wooden staircase from the citadel square and allow time to wander among the old graves.
