Cobbled lanes wind between pastel houses, towers named after the craft guilds that once defended them, and the landmark Clock Tower, about 64 metres tall and now a history museum. A covered wooden staircase, the Scholars’ Stairs, climbs to the Gothic Church on the Hill, regarded as one of Romania’s finest Gothic monuments. Each July a medieval festival fills the old streets with music and costumes.

Sighisoara Citadel
The Sighișoara Citadel is one of the few medieval fortified towns in Europe that people still live in. Transylvanian Saxon craftsmen and merchants built it on a hilltop above the Târnava Mare River, and its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, was probably born here around 1431.
