For centuries the square was the scene of markets, fairs, trials and public executions. Its houses, painted in shades of ochre, pink and green, belonged to the wealthy Saxon merchants and craftsmen whose guilds defended the town's towers. Among them is the House with the Stag, named after the stag's head on its corner.
In late July the square hosts the Sighișoara Medieval Festival, with music, costumes and knights' tournaments.
Sit at one of the terraces for a coffee, then follow the lanes to the Clock Tower, the covered staircase and the Church on the Hill.
