Sinaia Monastery

Sinaia Monastery was founded in 1695 by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino after his pilgrimage to Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai, which gave the monastery its name. The mountain resort that grew up around it later took the same name. Today the town of Sinaia, in the Prahova Valley, is best known for this monastery and nearby Peleș Castle.

About Sinaia Monastery

The complex has two courtyards. The small Old Church dates from the monastery’s founding in 1695. The larger Great Church was built in 1842–1846, enlarged at the turn of the 20th century, and decorated in a blend of Moldavian and Brâncovenesc styles. The monastery museum, opened in 1895, was the first exhibition of religious objects in Romania and holds old icons, crosses and an early Romanian Bible. It is an easy and rewarding stop on the walk up to Peleș.
