Shala River in Albania – Paradise on Earth
Share

The Shala River is a crystal-clear mountain river in the Albanian Alps that flows into Komani Lake, and its lower reaches – reached by boat across the lake – are among the most beautiful places in northern Albania. A typical visit combines a scenic boat ride of around 1–1.5 hours with several hours of swimming, relaxing and eating beside the turquoise water.

Its colour has earned it the nickname “Albania’s Thailand”, but this is very much an alpine river: cold, clear and framed by steep, forested peaks. Here is how to get there, what to do, where to stay and when to go.

What is the Shala River?

The Shala River rises near the village of Theth, close to the Montenegrin border, and runs south for around 36 km through the Shala valley, past Ndërlysaj, before emptying into Komani Lake, the reservoir on the Drin. In other words, the river you swim in at the end of the boat trip is the same one that tumbles through the Theth valley higher up.

The section most visitors see is where the river meets the lake: pebble beaches, emerald pools, cliffs and woods, with only a handful of guesthouses and no through road. Its water is famously clear, and the river is home to trout.

How to get to the Shala River

Step 1: reach Koman

Boats leave from the Koman dam, about an hour and a half by road from Shkodër via Vau i Dejës, or around three hours or more from Tirana. The last stretch of road passes through a tunnel to the dock. In season, early-morning minibuses run from Shkodër, and some from Tirana, timed to meet the boats.

Step 2: the boat

From Koman, small passenger boats and speedboats head up the lake in the morning, threading through narrow gorges for around 1–1.5 hours before landing by the river. Most return in the mid-afternoon, giving you roughly three to four hours ashore. Boats run from roughly spring to autumn and fill up quickly in summer, and schedules and prices change from season to season, so book ahead or check locally.

The easy option

Joining a tour removes the early starts and the logistics. Our North Albania in 3 Days tour dedicates its final day to Komani Lake and the Shala River, after visiting Krujë, Shkodër and Theth.

Things to do at the Shala River

  • Swim: the water is fed by mountain springs and snowmelt and stays very cold, even in August – exhilarating in short dips.
  • Relax on the shore: the pebble beaches are perfect for sunbathing, reading and picnics.
  • Explore a little: stroll along the bank or rent a kayak where available; the valley is narrow and some land is private, so stick to obvious paths.
  • Eat by the water: riverside guesthouses serve simple local food such as grilled fish, salads, cheese and byrek.
  • Enjoy the boat ride: the journey across Komani Lake, between sheer cliffs and wooded slopes, is a highlight in its own right.

Where to stay

A handful of simple guesthouses near the river offer rooms, home-cooked meals and, in some cases, space for tents. Facilities are basic and most open only in the warmer months, so book in advance and bring cash. Staying overnight is the best way to enjoy the valley in peace once the day boats have left.

Alternatively, base yourself in Shkodër and visit as a day trip. You can also build the Shala into a longer Alps itinerary: our Albania 6 Day Hike Tour crosses from Theth to Valbona on foot and spends a day on Komani Lake and the Shala River.

Best time to visit

The boat season generally runs from spring to autumn. June to September brings the warmest weather for swimming, while July and August are the busiest months, with many boats arriving on the same mornings, especially at weekends. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday in June or September; May and October are calmer still, though cooler. Whenever you go, remember that mountain weather can change quickly and that the water stays cold all year.

Tips for a great day

  • Start early to secure a place on the boat, especially in summer.
  • Bring cash, as cards may not be accepted.
  • Pack water shoes for the pebbles, a towel, a warm layer and sun protection.
  • Use a dry bag for your phone and documents on the boat.
  • Take all your rubbish back with you and avoid single-use plastics.
  • Keep noise down and respect the families who live and work in the valley.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to the Shala River?

The Shala River is reached by boat across Komani Lake. First travel to the Koman dam, about an hour and a half by road from Shkodër, then take one of the morning boats up the lake, which reach the river in around 1–1.5 hours. Many visitors join an organised day trip or a multi-day tour that includes road transport and the boat.

Can you swim in the Shala River?

Yes, swimming is one of the main reasons to visit, but the water is very cold even in midsummer because it is fed by mountain springs and snowmelt. Most people enjoy short, refreshing dips rather than long swims. Take care in deeper or faster-flowing sections, supervise children closely and bring a warm layer for afterwards.

Can you stay overnight at the Shala River?

Yes. A few simple guesthouses near the river offer rooms, meals and in some cases camping, mainly between late spring and early autumn. Facilities are basic, so book ahead and bring cash. Staying overnight means you can enjoy the valley after the day-trip boats have left, though many visitors prefer to stay in Shkodër instead.

When is the best time to visit the Shala River?

June to September is best for swimming and sunshine, with July and August the busiest months. Late spring and early autumn are quieter and still beautiful, although the water is colder and some services may be limited. Boats operate seasonally, so check schedules before you travel, especially outside the summer months.

Is the Shala River worth visiting?

Absolutely. The combination of a boat ride through Komani’s gorges and a few hours beside clear turquoise water makes it one of the most memorable days in northern Albania. It is busy in high summer, so go early, choose a weekday if you can, and help keep this fragile valley clean by taking your rubbish home.
