Vuno Village

Vuno is a traditional hillside village on the Albanian Riviera, set along the coastal road between Himarë and Dhërmi and looking down over Jalë Beach. Its name comes from the Greek word for ‘mountain’, a fitting description of the slopes on which its stone houses are built.

About Vuno Village

Vuno is one of the Orthodox Albanian villages of the historic Himara region. A school was founded here as early as 1628, and in 1720 the village joined its neighbours in refusing to submit to the Pasha of Delvinë. It is also the home village of several well-known Albanians, among them Spiro Jorgo Koleka, a leading figure of the national movement in the early 20th century and one of the organisers of the Vlora War of 1920.

Wandering its narrow lanes, too tight for cars, you will find the churches of St. Spyridon, built in 1778, and St. Mary, from 1783, both relatively well preserved though no longer in regular use, as well as fine old stone houses. Jalë, a popular summer beach, lies a short drive below, making Vuno a quiet base for exploring this part of the coast.

Combine a stroll through Vuno with a swim at Jalë for a perfect day on the Riviera.
