Dragon Bridge

The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most) spans the Ljubljanica river beside Ljubljana’s Central Market. Opened in 1901, when the city was part of Austria-Hungary, it replaced a wooden bridge damaged in the earthquake of 1895 and was first named after Emperor Franz Joseph I, taking its present name in 1919.

About Dragon Bridge

Built of reinforced concrete using Josef Melan’s system, it was one of the earliest bridges of its kind in Europe, and its Vienna Secession decoration was designed by the architect Jurij Zaninović. Four large copper dragons guard its corners, joined by sixteen smaller ones along the structure.

The dragon is the emblem of Ljubljana, linked to the legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who are said to have slain a dragon here. A playful local tale claims the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses. The bridge is a short walk from the market and the old town, an easy stop on any stroll through the centre.
